When pieces of machinery and the energy sources they run on — such as electricity, steam, gas and compressed air — pose a potential hazard to workers, you must put safety lockout systems in place by using approved lockout/tagout devices.
Lockout/Tagout Is An Important Safety Process
Construction Fasteners and Tools appreciates the all-important safety precautions workers must take when working on electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic and other forms of machinery and industrial equipment — including fans, gears, saws, conveyor belts and presses. Disconnecting the equipment and making sure it’s isolated from its energy source is only part of the process. Making sure it’s not reconnected and energized is the other crucial part of the lockout/tagout procedure.

Lockout Equipment Available
A lockout procedure typically follows five steps, including disconnecting the piece of equipment from its power source, making sure it’s not reconnected, verifying that it is without power, grounding or short-circuiting in the case of electrical equipment and providing protection from nearby live equipment.
Importantly for Canadian workers, the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety — or CCOHS — requires that approved lockout/tagout devices are used in accordance with Canadian standard CSA Z460-13, which covers the “Control of Hazardous Energy — Lockout and Other Methods.”

Our metal lock box and steel lockout hasps from name brands such as Master Lock, North Safety and Brady allow multiple workers to each lock a safety padlock in place. This process prevents the removal of the hasp or opening of the lock box until every last one of the padlocks has been opened and removed.
