Protect Your Hearing with Disposable, Uncorded Ear Plugs

According to Statistics Canada — the national statistical office — over 11 million Canadians work in noisy environments where exposure to noise of at least 85 decibels is a common occurrence. This information means that finding and using proper earplugs is an important issue, since occupational health and safety research has found that noise-induced hearing loss — or NIHL — can also negatively impact blood pressure, sleep, stress levels and other health issues.

Fortunately, one of the safest and most affordable ways to protect your hearing is through the use of uncorded earplugs that meet with Canadian Standards Association — or CSA — standard Z94.2-14 for “Hearing Protection Devices — Performance, Selection, Care and Use.” Under the CSA standard, foam earplugs that are specifically designed to fit comfortably in the ear are an easy way to protect your hearing.

Disposable Ear Plugs

The Canadian Union of Public Employees reports that occupational hearing loss can occur if you’re exposed to noise that’s louder than busy vehicular traffic for extended periods of time. To better understand this estimate as it relates to construction work, remember that a normal conversation registers at around 60 decibels, while construction equipment like air compressors can easily produce 92 decibels of noise. Power drills and circular saws can generate 100 decibels or more.

The Hearing Foundation of Canada puts these numbers into perspective when it reports that just two hours of exposure to noise of 85 decibels or more can result in NIHL. Bring the noise level up to 97 decibels, and hearing loss can occur in 30 minutes.

If you want to prevent tinnitus and the onset of NIHL, it’s important to know that disposable earplugs that have a noise reduction rating — or NRR — of 15 decibels or greater are a proven way to provide hygienically safe hearing protection. Constructed from a soft foam material for comfort and good fit, disposable uncorded earplugs are made to quickly conform to the wearer’s ear.

A good example of disposable ear plugs is the 3M Foam Uncorded Earplug 1100 with an NRR of 29 decibels. This CSA Z94.2 approved earplug comes in a handy dispenser box with 200 individually packaged pairs for quick and easy use.

In addition to 3M earplugs, Construction Fasteners and Tools stocks earplugs made by Howard Leight and E-A-R. With a host of single-use uncorded earplugs to choose from in skull screw, push-in and classic foam designs, you can easily find the right model to fit both your comfort requirements and budget. We sell earplugs both by the pair and by the box.

Our experienced customer service representatives are always happy to advise you on which style of earplug would be the best fit for you and your crew — and don’t forget to ask about buying in bulk for added savings!
