Machine Screw

Machine screws are designed for attaching parts and components using pre-threaded, tapped holes or for nuts. These specialty screws connect one component to another. They are often used for electronic, mechanical and industrial applications. A large variety of sizes, designs and thread types are available for meeting the demands of virtually any project.

Machine screws have uniform threading throughout the shank, from tip to head. Machine screws are available with Robertson heads and Phillips tipped as well as with coarse or fine threading. Coarse threaded screws (typically around 24 threads per inch) are resistant to cross-threading and galling. Finer threaded screws, nearer to 32 threads per inch, have higher tensile strength and better screw hold in vibrating environments, like an engine compartment.

Machine Screw Sizes

Machine screws match the threading and diameter of a pre-existing, pre-threaded hole. To read screw sizes, look to the product description. For example, a 14-20 x 2" has a diameter of 14, 20 threads per inch and an overall length of two inches. Diameters are in fractions of an inch. 14 has a thread width of 1/4" and sizes decrease from there. M-screws are metric, measured in millimetres.

Our Inventory

Machine screws are available with different head styles to match your project requirements. Machine screw head types include truss, flat, round, pan and hex head screws. Head style can impact fit and visual appeal. Screws in an array of sizes come in durable stainless steel or with zinc plating. Zinc plating offers increased resistance to corrosion and high visibility — an excellent choice for electronic and engine compartments.

Metric screws range from 0.4mm to 0.6mm in diameter with lengths up to 40mm. Most of our stainless and zinc machine screws measure from 4-40 up to 14-20 with a 3/8" option available.

Machine Screw Applications and Uses

Machine screws are typically smaller than wood and construction screws. They fasten components together using small washers, nuts or threaded inserts. Machine screws are popular fasteners for projects where components must achieve a firm, exact fit. They are often used for constructing appliances, computer systems, engine compartments, personal electronics and more.
